Research interest

I am a PhD candidate in Dr. Anna Savage’s lab at the University of Central Florida. Broadly, I’m interested in evolutionary ecology and research that informs conservation practices. I'm most interested in study systems that involve species within the Bufonidae and Viperidae families.

research with pygmy rattlesnakes

I am investigating how disease influences the ecological and evolutionary processes of Florida pygmy rattlesnakes (Sistrurus miliarius). I study S. miliarius across the state, integrating disease ecology, genomics, and long-term monitoring to understand survival and selection in the context of fungal pathogens and the invasive pentastome, Raillietiella orientalis.

research with pentastomes

I am the co-creator and leader of Snake Lungworm Alliance and monitoring (SLAM). I coordinate the collection of snake pentastome samples from across the southeastern United States which has opened pathways to research on
  • prevalence and intensity of R. orientalis infections across Florida snakes
  • new host species, infections in the pet trade, and the extent of the geographic range expansion of R. orientalis
and develop
  • a novel PCR assay for the detection of Raillietiella orientalis infections
  • genomic resources
  • specimen and DNA catalog of hundreds of pentastomes (including native pentastomes!)
